Davidovich Fokina and Pedro Sousa are facing off each other in this year’s Alicante Challenger 3rd round on the Spanish clay. This match is going to be a great one. Both talented players will play in a serious confrontation. Review our thoughts on this match here below.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina a 19-year-old talent from Spain. This player is making a slow but steady transition to men’s tennis. Two years from winning his junior Wimbledon title little by little he’s getting closer to ATP’s top 100. Though last season was a bit up and down this one seems to be different. Alejandro is showing some good results not only on his favorite surface clay but also on hard. He had some good performances in a couple of tournaments down in Asia. And now having gotten back home he already had a comfortable against an Italian Federico Gaio.
Last week on the Spanish clay ended up in a loss in semifinals against an eventual champion Pablo Andujar. Style of play is a cliche Spanish clay courter. Heavy topspins from the baseline, good footwork, reliable two-handed backhand and percentage play. Also not bad at the net which is rarely the case with most of the Spaniards. All in all, he is got all the qualities to become a solid pro on the ATP tour.
Pedro Sousa
Pedro Sousa a 30-year-old clay court specialist. All of his career was spent on the challenger circuit and not without success. Last year he lifted to trophies – one in his homeland Braga and one in German challenger – Pullach. Portuguese haven’t played much this season. After beating Tommy Robredo in this tournament Pedro ended a 9 match losing streak! Nothing special about Sousa playing style. A typical clay courter with good groundstrokes from the baseline.
Also, he has good footwork which allows him to play great defensively and offensively. His service is lack of pace and sometimes it causes a problem in a match. What prevented him from having a better career is the only surface he can play is clay. He rarely plays on hard and when he does he usually ends up losing.
H2H
This is gonna be the first meeting between the players.
