Quarter-finals of Madrid tournament. Possibly the greatest of all time Roger Federer meets the star of new generation Dominic Thiem. Federer won against Monfils today but it was a very tough and long game. Roger was trailing most of the 3rd set but managed to break Monfils and won after the tiebreak. The absolutely different situation on the Austrian side. Dominic is rolling on clay this season winning his last 7 games in a row including victories against such players like Nadal, Fognini, Medvedev and all in straight sets. That’s the main reason why he is considered a favorite for this game. Let’s get deeper into the preview below.

Dominic Thiem

Austrian have always been considered better on clay than on the other grounds and he started this season as well as it could’ve been expected. Serve is working well, both forehand and backhand are beautiful to watch and on point. The only concern here is how Thiem manages to perform against one of the greatest. As long as he doesn’t lose concentration and keeps showing this kind of form, he has all the chances to win this game.

Roger Federer

There are not enough words in the dictionary to describe what a legend Roger Federer is. Considered to be the best ever but mostly shines on hard and grass grounds. Federer doesn’t play a lot on clay because he chooses tournaments he plays wisely due to his age. He’s the best on hard and grass so that’s why he limits himself on clay. Of course, he can win against anyone on any ground but it’s tough for 37 y.o. to play for over 2 hours and meet player like Thiem the day after.

H2H

Thiem played vs Federer 5 times and is actually winning h2h 3-2 in ATP Tour history. Federer won 2 games on hard but lost on clay, grass and hard once as well.
