1/8 finals of an ATP 1000 tournament at Montreal, Canada (hard). This should be a very interesting match between two very well known veterans who’ve been playing great tennis so far this tournament. To have more insights on this ATP Roberto Bautista-Agut vs Richard Gasquet match please check out the preview below.
Roberto Bautista-Agut
31 years old Spaniard is currently ranked 13th overall. Hard ground were always the one Bautista played the best at and there is no surprise this season as well. Bautista has won 15 out of 19 matches he played on hard this season including 2 victories here, at Montreal. He’s already beaten B. Tomic and D. Schwartzman in straight sets even though both players were playing at a high level past few weeks. Bautista is often a player who is very confident playing against lower-ranked opponents and mostly struggles against guys from Top 10.
In other words, he’s a very good favorite who is consistent on that side, and a very bad underdog as he rarely surprises while playing against considerably stronger opponents. Bautista should have a tougher match tomorrow, but if he manages to play at a similar level he showed us yesterday, there would be no surprise to see him reaching the higher stage once again.
Richard Gasquet
33 years old veteran has dropped down to 66th ranking overall. It’s been a very unlucky season for him as injuries weren’t leaving him alone. Gasquet only played 18 matches before coming into this tournament and had a 9/9 record overall. Anyway, coming to this tournament, which is played on the ground Gasquet prefers the most, he’s looking pretty good. Gasquet had no problems defeating B. Paire in the first round and also managed to come out on top in a beautiful battle against the heavy favorite for that match, K. Nishikori.
Richard showed no signs of struggle due to any injury at first two matches which leads to an idea that he might finally be healthy and fully ready to compete here. He’s definitely got the talent to come back to at least Top 20, but the journey has to start coming into the hard ground season this year.
