Berankis had a lot of issues playing against a player with higher rankings these past seasons and even struggled against the lower-ranked ones. Inconsistency was considered as his biggest weakness, but this season Berankis has improved a lot on that area. He’s managed to win 39 out of 54 matches overall this season, including 21 out of 30 victories on a hard surface. 26 years old, currently 140th ranked in the world, Czech were not as good at competing on hard as his tomorrow’s opponent. The left-handed player does have a positive record on hard this season but has only played 13 matches throughout the year. He comes into the main draw of the US Open after winning 3 qualification matches. He’s beaten P. Sousa in straight sets in the first round, following with the victories over J. Jung (2-1) and P. Lorenzi (2-1) after that. Vesely was struggling on his first serve throughout the qualification matches and he will definitely have to step up on that area if he really wants to get some victories at the biggest stage of the world.
