Nick Kyrgios
24 years old Australian, who is currently ranked 52nd in the world, is playing probably the best tennis of his career these days. Kyrgios used to struggle at the higher stages of many tournaments due to his lack of concentration and being weak mentally. However, this tournament has shown some change in his game. It’s hard to tell if it’s a coincidence or Nick really improved on this area. However, he’s been able to stay calm in clutch moments and win important points in these situations. He was up 5-1 in 3rd set tie-break against Tsitsipas, but the Greek fought back and had the lead by 6-5.
Kyrgios managed to stay calm and composed from this point to take the win back and closed out the match in the tie-break by winning 9 to 7. It’s really looking like Kyrgios might take over this tournament if he keeps playing at the same level and with the same mindset.
Daniil Medvedev
23 years old Russian, who is currently ranked 10 in the world. He has played incredibly this tournament and reached the highest stage of it without losing a single set. Medvedev’s serve has been working pretty well throughout the whole tournament and all-around game was on point as well. It looks like Medvedev has reached his peak form of the season. Thanks to this tournament he’s getting prepared well for an upcoming US Open. Daniil had absolutely no problems with a Peter Gojowczyk, who’s defeated many favorites this tournament. Medvedev closed out the match in nearly 1 hour by winning 6-2 6-2.
It will be very interesting to see him facing Nick Kyrgios once again this year. Because even though they have similar play-style, their personalities are absolutely different. Anyway, Medvedev is in a lot better shape than he was in their first meeting. There would be no surprise to see the Russian becoming a champion of Washington.
