The final match of qualification for an ATP Grand Slam, US Open (hard). There we have two of the underdogs for this qualification denying the odds and facing each other tomorrow. To have more insights on this ATP Mirza Basic vs Santiago Giraldo match, please check out the preview below.
Mirza Basic
28 years old, currently 218th ranked in the world, Bosnian have won both matches of this qualification while being placed as an underdog before both of them. He’s defeated P. Gojowczyk 2-1 and E. Gomez in straight sets. Basic mostly relies on his serve in order to win matches and he were serving well in this qualification and that led to some victories. Anyway, he’s nowhere near the top-class player and he even has a negative win/loss record for second straight seasons. Anyway, because his serve has been working well so far, he has good chances to qualify for the main draw. We’ll have to see how will he be able to compete against absolutely different style player tomorrow.
Santiago Giraldo
31 years old veteran from Colombia, who is currently ranked 231st overall is far away from the best days of his career. He once were ranked 28th overall but has been dropping further and further away with every season. Giraldo is mostly a clay surface player and this is the ground he plays the most at. Giraldo prefers slow-paced tennis and loves to play longer rallies, what he is doing well on clay, but often struggles on hard, as this ground is a lot faster. Colombian comfortably defeated R. Marcora and M. Zverev in straight sets in first two rounds and looked in pretty decent form. Even though those victories should create some optimism for Giraldo, he will have to improve his game in order to qualify for the main draw tomorrow.
