Matteo Berrettini
23 years old, currently 13th ranked Italian is playing great in this tournament so far and hasn’t even lost a single set yet. He’s defeated J. Struff, Ch. Garin and R. Bautista-Agut in first 3 rounds and will face the biggest challenge of the tournament tomorrow. Even though Berrettini were down 3-1 against Bautista-Agut today, he’s managed to break twice and win the match in straight sets by showing that he came into the tournament ready to play at full strength. It’s always exciting to see this guy playing as he’s playing aggressive and fast-paced tennis. Knowing that Thiem plays at a similar style, Italian might have a really good chance tomorrow if he manages to keep up the pace that he’s shown previously.
Dominic Thiem
26 years old, currently 5th ranked Austrian is very close to his career-best ranking (4). Thiem hasn’t shown a high level of consistency so far this year. However, this week were a very good one for him. Not only did he manage to win the title of China Open, but he’s also defeated strong opponents like P. Carreno-Busta and N. Basilashvili in straight sets here, at Shanghai. Thiem is showing incredible form and there is no arguing about him being favourite for tomorrow’s match.
Anyway, we might see some fatigue coming into play tomorrow as he’s played 7 matches in 10 days already and tomorrow will play his 8th. If Thiem manages to perform at the same level he did today, he will have a very good chance of reaching the semi-final once again, but Berrettini shouldn’t be underestimated and Thiem will have to give his 100% in order to do so.
