Gael Monfils
32 years old, currently 13th ranked Frenchman will celebrate his 33rd birthday next Monday. With a victory tomorrow he will have to play on his birthday and this might add a little bit more motivation for Monfils. Even though Monfils has been struggling with injuries lately, he’s still holding 13/3 record this year while playing on hard surface. He’s always been a great player on this surface and if he manages to stay 100% healthy we might very well see him competing in the latest stages of this tournament. Monfils hasn’t lost a single set so far in this US Open after defeating A. Ramos and M. Copil in first two rounds. Monfils dropped out of this tournament in R64 last year and with a victory tomorrow he might add a lot more points in order to reach the Top10 once again.
Denis Shapovalov
20 years old, 33th ranked Canadian had a lot of mental issues past few months but it seems like he’s managed to overcome them and gain his self-confidence back. Shapovalov is holding nearly 70% win rate competing on hard this season and is doing well this tournament as well. Shapovalov looked dominant in both matches he’s played so far by defeating F. Auger-Alliasime and H. Laaksonen in straight sets. Tomorrow will be the biggest challenge for young Canadian in this tournament so far and will be interesting to see how well is he going to handle it. Shapovalov has reached R32 in US Open last year, where he lost against K. Anderson. Shapovalov has passed his previous result and can add up a lot more.
