First round of an ATP 1000 tournament at Cincinnati, USA (hard). They had two similarly ranked veterans facing off against each other in an interesting first-round match up. To have more insights on this ATP Fernando Verdasco vs Benoit Paire match, please check out the preview below.

Fernando Verdasco

35 years old veteran is currently ranked 31st overall. He hasn’t found any luck in his last 5 matches, as Verdasco only won 1 of them. Verdasco has been performing well on grass this season as he’s managed to reach the 1/8 final at Wimbledon, where he dropped out against D. Goffin, and Quarter-final at Eastbourne, where he dropped out against S. Querrey. Verdasco has always been a better player on clay than he’s been on hard, but he definitely has experience on his side in most of the matches he plays and his strongest point in every tournament is first few rounds, where his physical condition is still at best. Verdasco hasn’t played an official match on hard for longer than half a year and it’s hard to expect a lot from him at his first match here.

Benoit Paire

30 years old Frenchman, who is currently ranked 29th overall, has already played 4 matches on hard after the grass season ended. Paire has reached the quarter-finals at Washington where he dropped out against S. Tsitsipas. Similarly to Verdasco, the Frenchman has always been a better player on clay than he was on hard, but given the character of a player he is, Paire can surprise at any given moment. Paire has only won 4 out of 12 matches he’s played on hard this season, and with a few victories at this tournament, he might be able to get back on track.
