Dominic Thiem

The 25 years old Austrian is climbing the ranking very quickly this season. Already having one championship in Barcelona, one final spot in Madrid and now being on the edge of reaching the semi-final of the biggest tournament on the clay of the season is quite an accomplishment given that it’s not even half a season. Dominic has only lost 3 matches this season and it happened against Lajovic, Djokovic, and Verdasco.

Thiem’s main weakness in this tournament is his 2nd set. He won all 4 first set’s played but lost 3 of 4 2nd ones. He gave a set to Bublik, Cuevas and even Paul who is only ranked as 131th. If Thiem could add some stability and consistency to his game he is really threatening to become the next king of clay. Tomorrow is the biggest test of the tournament so far and let’s see how Thiem manages to overcome it.

 

Karen Khachanov

The young Russian really surprised everyone as not many people expected him to beat Juan Martin Del Potro in 1/8 final. Del Potro hasn’t looked at his best shape actually but we can’t take away any credit from Khachanov as he really played solid tennis in that match. Everyone tends to underestimate Khachanov on clay given that it’s not his most likable ground to play on but Khachanov is a big-time player who shows up in bigger tournaments.

Yes, clay might not be his main ground but he can definitely put on a show on it as well. The Russian only lost 2 sets at this tournament against Barrere and Del Potro. If Khachanov shows up in the same form he played against Del Potro tomorrow might be a really close match.
