To have more insights on this ATP Denis Shapovalov vs Dominic Thiem match, please check out the preview below.
Denis Shapovalov
20 years old, 32nd ranked a local Denis Shapovalov is finally healthy and ready to play at the highest level again. He’s had some injuries this season and a lack of confidence were clearly seen at his play. That led to dropping out early from many tournaments and he definitely wasn’t happy with the results. Now is a different story as we’re coming to hard ground season and this is the ground Shapovalov loves to play on the most. Montreal, as he’s mentioned many times, is his favorite tournament and it’s not hard to understand why. Denis is a Canadian and also surprised the world in 2017 after defeating the R. Nadal here, at Montreal.
Shapovalov has already played an opening match against P. Herbert where he left no chance for the Frenchman and closed out the match in straight sets. He’s looking strong and it’ll be very interesting to see him facing off against one of the best players today.
Dominic Thiem
25 years old Austrian, who is currently ranked 5th overall, has just won a tournament in Austria before coming here. Dominic has always been known for being an amazing player on clay and has over 70% win rate on this ground, but there’s a different story on hard. Thiem has already played 12 matches on the hard ground this year and only managed to win 6 of them. He hasn’t played on hard after the clay season as well. His form after winning the title recently is really questionable. He might take this tournament as an opportunity to warm up before a very important tournament. US Open will start later this month. We’ll have to see what Thiem has to show us here, at Montreal, but it will definitely not be as strong as his performances he’s been making on clay.
